PRESIDENT OBAMA was too busy to attend the celebrations in Germany this week marking the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago. But he did appear by video, delivering a few brief and bloodless remarks about how the wall was “a painful barrier between family and friends’’ that symbolized “a system that denied people the freedoms that should be the right of every human being.’’ He referred to “tyranny,’’ but never identified the tyrants – he never uttered the words “Soviet Union’’ or “communism,’’ for example. He said nothing about the men and women who died trying to cross the wall. Nor did he mention Harry Truman or Ronald Reagan – or even Mikhail Gorbachev.

He did, however, talk about Barack Obama.

The ranking Republican on the House intelligence committee on Tuesday night accused the White House of withholding information on the Fort Hood attack.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (Mich.) said administration officials delayed briefing members of Congress about the alleged gunman, raising “red flags” about what the White House was hiding.

“When they withhold information, you always start asking questions,” Hoekstra told Fox News. “That's what raises red flags. What do they know that they don't want us to know?”

To listen to some pundits, Barack Obama's public image began taking a serious beating when the off-year election returns came in a week ago. Or maybe it was the undeserved Nobel Prize, his approach to the war in Afghanistan, or when he revved up his pursuit of national health-care reform.

But the pundits, as usual, are wrong. In reality, Obama peaked the night he was elected.

When Michelle Obama moved into the White House, she instantly became one of the most famous first ladies in history, a symbol of racial pride, a victor in the battle of the sexes and the picture of a modern woman, mother and wife.

But from her days on the campaign trail to her residency in the White House, Obama’s favorability rating has been in flux, from a low of 48 percent in June 2008 to a peak of 72 percent last March to a slide to 61 percent in a recent Gallup Poll.

In a bit of political irony, the administration of President Obama is turning out to be the mirror image of the White House of President George W. Bush.

Democrats accused Bush of taking his eye off the ball, the war of necessity in Afghanistan, for a war of choice in Iraq. Now Republicans charge Obama took his eye off the ball, the domestic war of necessity to fix the economy, to focus on a war of choice, overhaul of health care. Poll after poll shows voters placing a higher priority on the economy, unemployment and the deficit than on health care. Republicans getting elected governor in Virginia and New Jersey last week proved that. But Obama and Democrats plow ahead with their health-care obsession.

Obama had his mission accomplished moment in February when the White House declared it had prevented unemployment from rising more than 8 percent by getting Congress to pass the $787 billion stimulus bill. After joblessness breached 9 percent, the White House said it had “misread” the economy and so had everyone else. That recalled the Bush administration saying the CIA and all the intelligence agencies of Western nations got it wrong about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
